160A Automatic Transfer Switch for Multi-Load Residential Applications in Saint Martin

Inquire

Residential backup power systems can become considerably more complex when a project includes multiple villas, independent electrical loads and generator backup.

For these applications, an automatic transfer switch (ATS) is not only used to transfer power between two sources. The ATS system also needs to manage multiple circuits and loads while maintaining a clear and organized power distribution arrangement.

AISIKAI recently supplied a multi-load, multi-circuit ATS distribution cabinet for a residential project in Saint Martin, serving 18 villas.

The system incorporates 18 units of 160A SKT1 Series automatic transfer switches, together with the related control, protection and distribution components. Each ATS is assigned to an independent circuit, allowing different residential loads to be managed through separate automatic transfer functions.

Multi-Load and Multi-Circuit ATS for Residential Projects

The key feature of this project is the combination of multi-load and multi-circuit automatic transfer in one centralized distribution cabinet.

Each villa represents an independent application, while the overall cabinet contains multiple transfer circuits. This allows the project to manage different residential loads separately rather than treating the entire development as a single load.

A multi-load ATS system can be useful when several independent loads need backup power from a common standby source.

Typical applications include:

  • Residential villa developments

  • Multi-building residential compounds

  • Hotels and guest accommodation

  • Commercial buildings with multiple independent loads

  • Generator-backed housing projects

  • Mixed residential and commercial developments

In these applications, the ATS arrangement can be designed so that different loads or buildings have their own automatic transfer functions.

18 Villas with 18 × 160A Automatic Transfer Switches

For the Saint Martin project, AISIKAI supplied a dedicated 160A ATS for each villa.

The main configuration includes:

18 × 160A SKT1 Series Automatic Transfer Switches

plus the associated control, protection, connection and distribution components required for the complete cabinet.

Each 160A automatic transfer switch is used for an independent transfer circuit. When integrated together, the 18 ATS units form a centralized multi-circuit ATS distribution cabinet for the residential development.

This arrangement allows the backup power system to serve multiple independent loads while keeping their transfer functions separated.

Rather than relying on one large transfer switch for all 18 villas, the system uses multiple ATS units according to the project's distribution structure and load requirements.

Why Use a 160A ATS for Residential Loads?

The appropriate ATS rating depends on the electrical load, distribution arrangement and backup power system.

For smaller residential applications, lower-rated small ATS products may be sufficient. Larger villas and residential properties, however, can have substantially higher electrical demand.

A 160A ATS provides a higher current capacity for applications where 63A or 100A transfer switch equipment may not be adequate.

A 160A automatic transfer switch can therefore be considered for:

  • Large private homes

  • Luxury villas

  • Residential buildings with higher connected loads

  • Generator-backed properties

  • Multi-load residential distribution systems

The actual ATS rating should always be selected according to the project's load calculation, generator capacity, protection design and applicable electrical requirements.

ATS for Home Use vs. ATS for Residential Projects

An ATS for home use is generally installed to provide automatic transfer between utility power and a standby generator or other backup source.

For a single home, the system can be relatively straightforward. However, a larger residential project can involve multiple buildings, multiple circuits and multiple independent loads.

This is where a residential ATS system becomes more than an individual transfer switch.

For example, a project may have:

One project → Multiple villas → Multiple loads → Multiple ATS circuits → One integrated distribution cabinet

The Saint Martin installation follows this type of configuration, using 18 independent 160A ATS units within one cabinet.

This provides a structured solution for projects where multiple residential loads need automatic backup power management.

Multi-Load ATS Distribution for Generator Systems

In generator-backed applications, the normal power source and standby generator are connected through the automatic transfer system.

When the normal source becomes unavailable, the ATS initiates the transfer sequence according to the configured control logic. When normal power is restored, the system can return the load to the normal source according to the specified operating sequence.

For a multi-load ATS system, this operation is applied to multiple independent circuits.

The advantage of this configuration is that the transfer function of one load does not have to be treated as the same circuit as all other loads. Each ATS can manage its assigned load according to the project design.

This is particularly relevant for residential developments where multiple villas may share a common generator or standby power infrastructure.

Individual ATS Testing Before Cabinet Assembly

With 18 ATS units installed in one system, quality control starts before the cabinet is assembled.

Each 160A automatic transfer switch is individually inspected and tested during production before being installed into the completed cabinet.

This provides an opportunity to verify the condition, configuration and operation of each ATS at the product level.

Instead of treating the finished cabinet as the first testing point, AISIKAI checks the individual ATS units before integration.

For a multi-load residential project, this is particularly important because each ATS is responsible for its own independent circuit.

Testing the Complete ATS Cabinet After Assembly

Testing does not end after the individual ATS units have been checked.

Once the 18 ATS units and related components are assembled into the completed multi-circuit, multi-load ATS distribution cabinet, the complete cabinet is inspected and tested again.

At this stage, the focus is on the integrated system rather than on the individual ATS alone.

The inspection covers areas such as:

  • ATS installation and configuration

  • Internal wiring and terminal connections

  • Control wiring

  • Circuit identification

  • Distribution connections

  • Component installation

  • Overall electrical and mechanical condition

  • Functional operation of the assembled circuits

This second stage of testing is important because assembly introduces additional connections and wiring that are not part of an individual ATS.

Therefore, the quality control process follows two important stages:

Individual ATS → Cabinet assembly → Complete cabinet inspection and testing

This approach helps verify that the final product delivered to the project site corresponds to the intended electrical configuration.

A Centralized Multi-Load ATS Cabinet for 18 Villas

The completed cabinet provides a centralized solution for the project's multiple residential loads.

Instead of installing separate standalone cabinets for every villa, the 18 ATS units are integrated into one distribution arrangement. This allows the electrical system to maintain independent transfer circuits while keeping the overall installation organized.

For engineering contractors and generator system integrators, this type of multi-load ATS cabinet can be useful where several buildings or loads need to be connected to a common standby power system.

The exact cabinet design, protection arrangement, generator capacity and distribution configuration should be determined according to the project's electrical drawings and load requirements.

AISIKAI SKT1 Series 160A ATS

The AISIKAI SKT1 Series is designed for automatic transfer applications in power generation and backup power systems.

The 160A version provides a practical solution for residential and other applications requiring higher transfer capacity.

It can be used as an individual 160A ATS for home use, or integrated into a larger multi-load ATS and multi-circuit ATS distribution system for residential developments.

The Saint Martin project demonstrates the latter application, with 18 × 160A SKT1 Series automatic transfer switches integrated into one centralized ATS distribution cabinet for 18 villas.

Conclusion

A residential ATS solution for a multi-villa project needs to address more than the transfer switch itself. It needs to consider the number of loads, independent circuits, backup power arrangement, cabinet integration and final system testing.

The Saint Martin project combines 18 independent 160A ATS circuits into one multi-load, multi-circuit distribution cabinet, providing automatic transfer functions for 18 residential villas.

From individual ATS inspection and testing to final cabinet assembly and system testing, AISIKAI applies quality control at both the component and complete-system levels.

For projects requiring a 160A automatic transfer switch, 160A ATS, ATS for home use, ATS for residential applications, multi-load ATS, or multi-circuit ATS distribution cabinets, AISIKAI can provide configurations based on the project's electrical requirements.
